The Hard Truth
Updated: Feb 13
There's a saying that traces back at least as far as Bambi. Thumper tells us, "If you can't say somethin' nice, don't say nothin' at all."
I agree and disagree.
That statement gets misconstrued. I'm all in on kindness. It is a noble trait that many of us could be better at. However, life isn't all sunshine and rainbows. People need to hear hard truths.
Just because the truth is hard, doesn't mean it's not "nice." In fact, sometimes, the "nicest" thing you can do is tell someone a truth that they need to hear, whether they want to or not.
The way you deliver the message is important, and if you go about it the wrong way, it certainly won't be heard.
But don't use Thumper's words as an excuse not to have a difficult conversation.
Constructive criticisms are essential for growth.
If you want to grow, you must be willing to hear the message.
Being a leader requires the ability to deliver that message effectively.
