There is nothing quite like a good cup of coffee to start your morning...and few things more disappointing than a bad one. I'm not a coffee snob by any means. We buy the 3 pound bag of San Francisco Bay French Roast at Costco as proof of that.
Each morning, we grind up our beans and use a French Press to prepare the morning cup of Joe...I know, the French Press automatically makes me at least a partial coffee snob so I guess I should retract my previous, not a coffee snob, statement. Not sorry about it.
Last week, we decided to treat ourselves to a bag of Starbucks Sumatra blend, one of my favorites. Since whole bean offerings of the Sumatra variety are hard to come by at the grocery store, we went with the pre-ground stuff. I have since decided that we shouldn't do that again.
You never know how long the pre-ground stuff has been sitting on the shelf losing its freshness, and the Sumatra just tasted old and disappointing.
After a week of old coffee, the San Francisco Bay French Roast was quite delightful this morning. Though, I must note, the bag on the shelf at Costco this week was only a 2 pounder, which is less than ideal, but we'll survive.
Maybe, at some point in the future, I'll be able to afford to be a little bit more of a coffee connoisseur (that sure is a tough word to spell) and sample some more exotic options.
For now, I'm content to drink the cheap stuff bought in bulk.
So long as I get to grind my own beans.
