Songs of America - Jon Meacham & Tim McGraw
Really cool read. This book traces back to the formational years of our great country. It weaves a thread between the major social and political movements and the songs/music inspired by the times. It would be irresponsible not to mention that some of the times may have been inspired by the songs. From the Revolutionary era to current day, Songs of America highlights those connections and the deep influence that music has had, and continues to have, on our society. Upon completing this book, I feel a little extra proud to be an American and I am consumed with an overwhelming sense of Patriotism. If you are a connoisseur of either American history or music, this book is for you.
I spent the week with a true patriot by the name of Tim Corbin. He is the head baseball coach at Vanderbilt University (for those of you that have been living under a rock). It is clearly evident that Corbin places tremendous value in being patriotic and teaching others what it means, what it looks like, and why it's important. Patriotism is a pillar of his platform.
Coach Corbin is more than a patriot. He is a lot of things. He is a leader, a relationship builder, a teacher, a developer of men, a man of character, and he does some baseball coaching on the side (clearly he does okay in that regard as well).
I feel very fortunate to have spent the week as a member of the Vanderbilt baseball staff led by a man whose mission is bigger than baseball.
I feel like I'm leaving Vanderbilt a better baseball coach, yes, but I am also a better man and a better American.
And I can't wait to get home and give hugs and kisses to my bride and the munchkins. Hopefully, next time, I can bring them with me.
